Make the best of the rest of summer while it’s still here!

Hey, Summer Lovers!

True, it can be difficult to watch the summer season go by, but it’s important to remember that, for the time, it’s still here. I know, it’s not really the same with school back in session and the days getting shorter, but it’s not technically fall until September 23. So make the best of the rest and go enjoy the beautiful weather of the great outdoors.

Last week I talked about what a fun activity apple-picking can be. It’s always been one of my personal favorite end-of-summer activities. But that’s not the only fun activity you can do that marks the end of summer…
Campfires are a great way to say goodbye to the summer season!
Idea #2: Sitting around a campfire. This time of the season provides perfect temperatures for campfires! Who doesn’t love keeping warm in a circle of friends sitting, hypnotized, around a fire? Enjoying some hot chocolate or some tasty s’mores makes a fire even better and keeps the chills away.

If you’re unfamiliar with the seasonal shift toward Autumn that we experience in northern Wisconsin as the climate varies rather dramatically across our lovely country, let me tell you, I’m sorry you miss out on this beautiful landscape.

Most people who live in northern Wisconsin revere the Fall season as their favorite of the four. It’s mine. The temperature’s typically in the Goldilock’s Zone of being JUUUST right! That’s what makes it so nice to sit around a campfire in the late evening and warm your bones.

As perfect as they are, campfires can suddenly become dangerous if they aren’t properly controlled. Here are some helpful tips from Everything Summer Camp to stay safe around a fire:

  • Keep a shovel and bucket of water nearby.
  • Keep extra wood away from the fire. Keep your eyes on the fire and keep look out for heavy winds that blow sparks from the flames all over
  • Keep a safe distance away from the fire and watch for flying sparks when the wind picks up.
  • Always assume that the firewood, fire pit, or anything else involved in the fire is HOT!!!
  • Don’t leave a campfire unattended—not even for a minute.
  • And, of course, make sure you have the help and supervision of an adult when dealing with fire.

Stay safe and thanks for reading, Summer Fans!

9/11 Remembrance

Proud Americans,

Today, we remember the loved ones we lost on that horribly tragic morning 13 years ago. If you’re old enough, then you most-likely recall exactly where you were and what yToday we remember the awful attacks that we suffered 13 years agoou were doing the moment you found out what had happened on September 11, 2001. When a wound leaves such a nasty scar, you don’t forget about it.

I still remember where I was when I first heard about what was happening. The majority of Americans didn’t necessarily know the people who died that day, but it still hurts because it happened to our country.

Whether you knew them or not, today is a day to remember those who were killed. There are many ways that communities and individuals can demonstrate their remembrance. Here are a few ideas on how you can play a role in memorializing the victims of 9/11:

  •  Take Time to Observe a moment of silence. Setting a little time aside during the school day or even just alone in your room can be very helpful to all participants. With silence comes peace. The official 9/11 anniversary ceremony at the Ground Zero site where the Twin Towers once stood observes moments of silence at the times of the attacks.
  •  Toll the Bells. Ringing bells in your community at 8:46 a.m. (the time of the first attack) is a simple reminder to everyone in your local area.
  •  Fly the Flag at Half-Staff. Flags are flown at half-staff to commemorate the deaths of ranking officers and national crises.
  •  Speak the Names of the Victims. You can download a list of the names of those who were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The length of this list is horrifying and daunting, but it’s important that these names are remembered.
  •  Honoring the Heroes. The most positive light we can take from the anniversary of this national tragedy is the response we had, the unity that arose from out of the aftermath, and the bravery of those first responders! Thank you.

Whatever way you decide to remember this unfortunate anniversary, all of us at Everything Summer Camp are proud to commemorate and honor with the rest of our country.

What NFL quarterback attended Camp Champions?

Hey, Campers!

Every summer camp fan knows that they aren’t the only one who loves the summer camp experience! After all, what would camp be if you spent the entire thing alone? It’s a good thing so many people love it. Did you know that most famous actors, athletes, musicians, and other big-name celebrities were once summer campers too? I’ve talked about 32 of them on this Blog so far and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

With no shortage of former summNFL star quarterback Drew Brees has seen success since his start with The Saintser camper celebrities, today I’d like to talk about an awesome athlete, NFL quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, Mr. Drew Brees. Since he joined the New Orleans Saints in 2006, Drew has seen much success. He led the team to the championship of Super Bowl XLIV and was named MVP that year.

But before Drew saw all this success, before his college career, before he graduated from high school, he was a summer camper. As a matter of fact, he went to the same one as Lisa Loeb at Camp Champions in Marble Falls. Camp Champions is a coed camp just outside of Austin, Texas with which Everything Summer Camp has the pleasure of working.

An old camp counselor of his, Nick Fole, recalls back when Drew was only 12 years old. Fole spoke about how Drew would wake him up way earlier before any other camper was awake, and they would play basketball on the courts outside until everybody else woke up. “He was pretty hard to beat. I was a college football player, and I had to work pretty hard. It’s a true test of how competitive he was, even when he was 12.”

Drew went to Camp Champions for eight summers! He REALLY liked camp!
Drew Brees has seen magnificent success since his career with The Saints began.
In fact, this guy loves summer camp so much that he’s turned himself into a summer camp benefactor when he’s off the field. Having donated to the summer camp program at Purdue University, PALS, you can see why Everything Summer Camp is happy to shine the spotlight on him in gratefulness and recognition.

Thanks, Drew.

What do you do when the summer ends?

Hey, Summer Lovers!

It’s hard to watch the summer season go by, but it’s important to remember that, for the time, it’s still here. Sure, school’s back in session and the days are getting shorter, but it’s not technically fall until September 23. And, until then, it remains summer. So make the best of the rest and get out and enjoy the beautiful weather of the great outdoors. The weather’s perfect this time of the season!

Everything Summer Camp will be helping you out with some great ideas for outdoor activities, not just today, but for the next three Mondays in September.Apple-Picking is quite a memorable time for children

Idea #1: Apple-Picking. This is always one of my favorite end-of-summer activities. There’s nothing like taking a trip out to an apple orchard and filling your bushel with apples that were picked straight off the branch, touched by nobody but you. Doesn’t that sound good?

I have so many fond memories from when I was a child, walking through the seemingly endless aisles of apple trees with my family, climbing ladders to reach the perfect apple, running with my cousins because my dad and uncle scared us pretending to be bears…

It’s pretty hard NOT to have a fun time when you’re out apple-picking! After all, the picking process is its own reward in itself. All the delicious apples that you’ve picked along the way are a bonus for the days to come.

Luckily, there’s no sThere's no such thing as having picked too many apples!uch thing as picking too many apples. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but aside from an awesome snack, there are lots of things you can make to enjoy your hand-picked apples. Make apple sauce, apple cider, apple juice, apple crisp, apple pancakes, apple pie, CARAMELED APPLES!…

There’s really no downside to apple-picking! I know I’m planning a picking trip in the near future, how ‘bout you? Till next time, readers.

How did Grandparents’ Day get started?

Hey, Grandkids!

Sure, Mom and Dad are great! I mean, c’mon! They raise you, they feed you, they house you. They give you everything that you NEED! Now, don’t get me wrong, that’s really, truly amazing of them; but today isn’t about our mothers or our fathers. No, today is National Grandparents’ Day.

Unlike your parents, GrandmGrandparents are often a kid's favorite role models.a and Grandpa are the ones who give you everything that you WANT! In fact, they spoil you rotten! Their love for you knows no bounds and it’s always such a treat to make a trip over and visit the two of them! Thank goodness there’s a day that’s entirely dedicated to them!

But, like every other holiday, it hasn’t always been around. National Grandparents’ Day has been recognized in the United States since 1978 and is celebrated in various other countries on more-or-less arbitrary days. I think that it’s only a matter of time before the entire planet celebrates WORLD Grandparents’ Day!

So how did such a holiday come about? Well, much the same as how Mother’s Day and Father’s Day was created, Grandparents’ Day became officially recognized in the U.S. through persistent rallying, letter-writing, and determination.

A woman named Marian McQuade from West Virginia is responsible for making this holiday official. Her purpose was to inform the younger generation of the contributions made by their elders. She gathered people who supported what she was doing and, together, they contacted political figures like governors, senators, and congressmen from all 50 states, urging them to recognize Grandparents’ Day.
Happy National Grandparents Day!
Within the following three years, 43 states had proclaimed their own statewide Grandparents’ Day. Pretty soon, a national proclamation was made and signed by the president at the time, Jimmy Carter. The signed document states the purpose of the day as, “…to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer”.

Thanks for reading and Happy Grandparents’ Day from all of us here at Everything Summer Camp!

It’s perfect Is it just us at Everything Summer Camp, or is it time to get back to some football?!outside and it all means one thing’s for certain—football’s back! This time of year, in golden, autumn weather like this, it’s only right to watch some football on TV and play a game of 500 with your friends during halftime.

That’s what a Sunday afternoon in autumn is all about! The 2014 NFL, regular season kickoff, however, is not launching on a Sunday. Instead, it’s TONIGHT with the Green Bay Packers facing off against the current Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field in Washington. The game starts at 7:30pm Central/Standard Time.

As Wisconsinites, here at Everything Summer Camp, our team is Green BSeahawks and the Packers lining up at the scrimmage lineay. I think we’re a little nervous about starting out the season against the reigning champs, but we’re a good-lookin’ team who definitely could make this year the year we reclaim the championship and bring it back to Lambeau!

Football is football whether you’re a Packer fan, a fan of the Seahawks or if you root for any of the other 30 teams that make up the NFL. No matter who’s playing, it’s just good to see that it’s back!

So celebrate along in America’s most popular sport and join in the fandom that grows more and more every year. Football appeals to a lot of people which is good because the more people you watch it with, the more fun it is! (That’s partially why it’s so cool to actually go see a game at a stadium with a thousand other fans.) Throw a party and enjoy tonight’s game with all your football friends.
